With support provided by The Tenet Healthcare Foundation, Houston Northwest Medical Center and Cypress Creek EMS (CCEMS) have launched a newly designed bike rodeo program for children to increase awareness of bicycle safety. The bike rodeo includes a helmet fit station, bike maintenance check, street sign education, and an obstacle course. The obstacle course covers hand signals for right and left turns, stopping, changing lanes, and other safe riding practices.
“Approximately 300,000 children go to the emergency room every year because of bicycle injuries,” says Javier Deloza, director of emergency services at Houston Northwest Medical Center. “That’s why it is so important for children to learn about bicycle safety and always wear a helmet to decrease the risk of brain injury. The bicycle rodeo helps children understand the rules of the road in a safe environment so when they go out on their own they can take the necessary precautions and ride safely.”
“The Cypress Creek EMS Bike Medic Response Team (BMRT) is grateful for this opportunity. BMRT members will use their training to educate children and their parents in the tenets of bicycle safety. Showing children the “Rules of the Road” in a unique environment, we are able to keep the child’s attention and they are more likely to retain the lessons learned,” explains Wren Nealy, Jr., director of special operations for Cypress Creek EMS.
The traveling bike rodeo can be soon at community events throughout northwest Houston. To request a visit to your local community event, call Kendra Windisch at CCEMS at 281-440-9650 x132.
