Free Prostate Cancer Preventative Screening

Houston Northwest Medical Center
August 12, 2008

Prostate cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in men. This year alone it is predicted that over 219,000 American men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer.

“For unknown reasons, prostate cancer is more common among African-American men than among men of other races,” says Don Berardinucci, MD, urologist on the medical staff at Houston Northwest Medical Center. “In fact according to the Prostate Cancer Foundation, African American men are 61 percent more likely to develop prostate cancer compared with Caucasian men and are nearly 2.5 times as likely to die from the disease.”

Dedicated to the health of the community, Houston Northwest Medical Center will offer free preventive prostate cancer screenings from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 20, 2008 in the Medical Mall II. To schedule a reservation please call 281-580-0000.

The prostate, a walnut-sized gland located just below the bladder in men, is important to bladder control and normal sexual functioning. Men at higher risk for developing the disease include African Americans and men with a close relative who had prostate cancer before age 65.

Doctors say the best way to beat prostate cancer is by detecting it at its earliest stage. The American Cancer Society believes that doctors should offer the PSA blood test and DRE (digital rectal exam) yearly, beginning at age 50 to men who do not have any serious medical problems. Men at high risk (African Americans and men who have a close family member with prostate cancer at an early age), should begin testing at age 45.

Houston Northwest Medical Center will offer free prostate preventative screenings that include a Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) blood test and a Digital Rectal Exam (DRE) performed by a trained professional on Saturday, September 20, 2008. Registration is required by calling 281-580-0000.
