| Houston Northwest Medical Center Supports the American Cancer Society’s Northwest Area Relay for Life Houston Northwest Medical Center and the Tenet Healthcare Foundation supported the 2008 Relay for Life event that was held April 18 and 19. The annual fundraiser event is a community-wide, survivors' celebration and relay-style walk that benefits cancer research, education and patient services.
"We are proud to participate and support such an import community event," said Drew Kahn, Chief Executive Officer at Houston Northwest Medical Center. "The evening highlights those individuals who have survived cancer, and it is a celebration of life."
“Cancer directly and indirectly touches the lives of so many,” stated John A. Mier, BSN, RN, Director of Medical/Surgical Nursing at Houston Northwest Medical Center. “Observing such a large group of survivors begin the first lap of the relay was an inspiration for what we do as care givers in our community. It did not matter if we donated the gift of money or time watching this event proves that we make a difference.”
One of the evening's highlights is the Ceremony of Hope. As the light dims over the lake, the night is brightened by the glow of lighted bags called luminarias, each honoring someone who has battled cancer or has been lost to the disease.
According to the Texas Department of State Health Services there is an estimated 33,836 cancer-related deaths in Texas every year. Routine screenings by a physician may prevent some cancers, including cervical cancer, breast and colorectal cancer, and early detection of cancers through these screenings can be the key.
