| Proceeds from Auxiliary Gift Shop Provide Medical Scholarships to Local Students |

Springtime is a time for fresh flowers, budding leaves and new grass. It is also the time of year when the Auxiliary at Houston Northwest Medical Center awards its annual medical scholarships to a deserving group of area students. Since beginning the program nearly 35 years ago the Auxiliary has awarded approximately $1.9 million in scholarships to students from the Klein, Spring and Aldine school districts. The scholarships, which are funded by proceeds from the hospital, are given directly to local students and through grants to Lone Star College – North Harris, Northwest Assistance Ministries and the Family Violence Center.
“Giving these scholarships is a twofold way for us to give back to the community,” says Wayne Oldham, Auxiliary president. “We can give of ourselves by assisting patients and guests in the hospital and then, using proceeds from the gift shop, turn around and give back to the community through these scholarships. It is a very rewarding way to support our hard-working students and encourage careers in medicine.”
Scholarships are given to approximately 85 students each year who are interested in going into the medical field as a doctor, nurse or allied health professional. Scholarship candidates are graduating high school seniors or students who have already graduated and are enrolled in a medical training program. Students are selected from area schools or may be related to hospital employees.
“Right from the beginning when the gift shop opened in the early 1970s we had in mind what we would do with the proceeds,” says Oldham. “The more money we make in the gift shop, the more money we are able to give as scholarships. This year we are giving more than $60,000.”
Scholarship applications may be picked up at the hospital information desk or in the gift shop. Scholarships are awarded annually in April based on each student’s grades, volunteer work and extracurricular activities. The gift shop is located on the first floor of the hospital and carries a wide variety of merchandise, including plants, flowers, balloons, candy, and items for newborns.
The gift shop is open Monday through Friday from 8:30 AM to 7:45 PM, Saturday from 10 AM to 4 PM, and Sunday from noon to 4 PM. For more information about volunteering at Houston Northwest Medical Center, call 281-440-1000 and ask for the information desk.
