The Breast Center at Houston Northwest Medical Center offers bone densitometry to measure bone mass. The results of a bone densitometry scan are used by the referring physician to identify the extent of osteoporosis and, if necessary, to determine a treatment program to reduce the risk of fracture. The lower the density of a bone means the higher the risk of fractures.
About Bone Health The National Osteoporosis Foundation recommends that bone mineral density testing should be performed on:
-
All women over the age of 65.
-
Younger postmenopausal women with one or more risk factors (risk factors include being thin, female and Caucasian or Asian, having a family history of osteoporosis, an inactive lifestyle, current cigarette smoking, excessive alcohol intake and abnormal absence of menstrual periods).
-
Postmenopausal women who may have a bone fracture (to confirm the break and determine the extent of osteoporosis).
To schedule an appointment, call 281-440-2600. A physician order is required.
