Bone Densitometry
The Breast Center also offers bone densitometry, also known as a bone density exam. A bone density exam can be done either before or after a mammogram or performed separately. The results of a bone density exam are used by your referring physician to identify the extent of osteoporosis and, if necessary, to develop a program to reduce the risk of fracture.
During a bone density exam, you will be positioned lying down to help ensure the accurate measurement of the area to be scanned. This procedure can be performed only on patients weighing less than 340 pounds. The entire procedure is completed in approximately 30 minutes.
