The Breast Center at Houston Northwest Medical Center now allows women over the age of 40 to schedule their own digital screening mammogram without a referral from their primary care physician. Self-initiated digital screening mammograms are intended to offer women an easy option for scheduling a screening mammogram and helping detect breast cancer before symptoms appear.

Early detection is one of the most powerful tools in fighting breast cancer. The American Cancer Society recommends that women have a mammogram every year after age 40. It is also recommends that women age 40 and older without symptoms have clinical breast exams annually.
