Rehabilitative Services at Houston Northwest Medical Center helps patients return to an optimal level of productivity and rebuild their lives after traumatic injury, surgery or major health event affects their current lifestyle. Our comprehensive rehabilitation program is provided by or under the direction of licensed therapists and includes a full continuum of care from inpatient to outpatient.

Our Services
Occupational Therapy
The goal of occupational therapy is to help patients perform tasks of daily living such as feeding, dressing and bathing, and other life skills. After an initial patient assessment, the therapist develops a program designed to help the patient regain optimal function and independence.
Recovery goals may be accomplished through exercise, relaxation, muscle re-education and training in the skills required for the activities of daily living. In addition, therapists can provide facilitative techniques, appliance and garment planning, energy conservation techniques, splinting and home program planning.
Occupational therapists can teach patients with arthritis new ways to accomplish their daily tasks without putting undue stress on painful joints. Perceptual and cognitive training is offered for patients who may suffer from the effects of a stroke or progressive neurological disorder. Therapists are trained in hand therapy techniques for post injury and post surgical management, including splinting. The department also provides pediatric therapy for developmental and congenital disorders.
Physical Therapy
Physical therapy is designed to help each patient achieve optimal functioning and quality of life. Patients with orthopedic, musculoskeletal and neurological conditions are candidates for rehabilitation. In addition, patients with cardiovascular and pulmonary complications may also achieve results from physical therapy.
Programs are customized to the individual’s needs. Activities are designed to improve range of motion, muscle strength, balance, coordination and endurance. Patients may also receive training in performing their activities of daily living, gait training and muscle re-education. Therapists may also utilize modalities and manual therapy/mobilization to achieve stated goals.
Surgical patients are treated pre- and post-operatively to help reduce pain and regain or restore function. Patients in need of wound care are also candidates for therapeutic intervention.
Speech Therapy
Speech therapy assists patients who need training to overcome voice disorders or to regain speech following an injury or health event, such as a stroke. Licensed speech pathologists also work with people who have dysphagia, or difficulty in swallowing. These patients may receive swallow retraining, modified barium swallow studies and dietary modifications.
Patients with cognitive deficits and memory problems may benefit from speech and language therapy, cognitive and memory skills, and oral motor musculature strengthening.
Speech and language therapy is available for pediatric patients with developmental delays in speech.
