About Back Pain
Back pain is the second most common neurological ailment in the United States – only headaches are more common. Although anyone can have back pain, certain factors increase the likelihood of experiencing some level of back pain.

Age – Most people have their first occurrence of low back pain between the ages of 30 and 40. Older people tend to experience more back pain.

Fitness level – Back pain is more common in people who are not in shape because weak back and abdominal muscles may not support the spine properly.

Diet – Obesity as a result of a diet high in fat can stress the back due to additional weight.

Heredity – Disc disease and some other causes of back pain may be genetically linked.

Race – African American women are more likely than their Caucasian counterparts to develop spondylolisthesis (a condition in which a vertebra in the lower spine slips out of place).

Total Joint Replacement
Total joint replacement patients may benefit from a program that includes a comprehensive pre-operative class that allows them to learn about the surgery and recovery process. The class addresses nutritional needs, physical therapy, occupational therapy and pain management. In preparation for the return home after surgery, a home assessment may be conducted to help promote safety at home.

Surgical Treatments for Chronic Back Pain
