Nine students from the Aldine, Klein and Spring Independent School Districts were honored recently for their winning entries in the second annual art contest hosted by Houston Northwest Medical Center and Frost Bank – Northgate. Ninety works of art submitted by area students were selected from the 120 entries for display in the hospital that best depicted the theme “The Gift of Nature.” The nine winners attended an exclusive reception held recently for students and their families where they were awarded monetary prizes or art supply gift baskets given by Frost Bank – Northgate.
“Because we are committed to providing quality children’s services in our community, we felt that working with our local independent school districts and enlisting their help to provide children’s art for display in our hospital was a great fit,” said Linda Mercier, RN, chief executive officer at Houston Northwest Medical Center. “Hospital patients and guests will certainly appreciate seeing all these beautiful pictures.”
All three winners in Division I (third to fifth grades) attend school at Kohrville Elementary in Klein ISD. Division II (sixth to eighth grades) winners go to Claughton Middle School in Spring ISD, Drew Academy in Aldine ISD, and Klein Intermediate in Klein ISD. The winners in Division III (ninth to twelfth grades) are from Aldine ISD’s Nimitz High School and Eisenhower High School, and Klein High School in Klein ISD.
“Over its 143 years, Frost has been a responsible corporate citizen which seeks opportunities to provide financial resources, leadership and support to countless educational, economic and community initiatives,” said Adrian Cadena, relationship manager at Frost Bank -- Northgate. “As a fellow northwest Houstonian and Klein Oak graduate, this contest is particularly special. I believe it helps to build confidence, inspire and reinforce our youths to express themselves through art."
Entries of original, two-dimensional artwork were evaluated on technique, personal expression, organization, and relation to theme. Each student also submitted a short written statement describing his or her entry. Artwork from local students in grades 3 through 12 will be on display throughout the hospital for one year. A list of students’ first names and respective schools whose art was selected for display has been posted on the hospital’s website at www.hnmc.com/ArtContest.
