The quality designations reflect the hospital’s ability to meet rigorous quality criteria based on nationally recognized medical standards and expert advice. The COE designations mean that the hospital is able to met CIGNA’s highest standards for quality and efficiency. The hospital received designations for 2010 in the following areas:

  • Adult Pneumonia
  • Angioplasty*
  • Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting*
  • Cardiac Catheterization
  • Heart Attack
  • Heart Failure
  • Vaginal Delivery

* Indicates CIGNA HealthCare COE designation

“We are very pleased that the high quality care provided at our hospital has once again been recognized by CIGNA,” said Linda Mercier, interim chief executive officer at Houston Northwest Medical Center.  “Our patients and the community benefit from the dedication that our physicians and staff show each and every day. These designations demonstrate our commitment to providing care that exceeds nationally recognized standards for these conditions.”

The CIGNA designations are based on the hospital’s effectiveness in treating the selected condition or performing the procedure. The designation measures and weighs The Leapfrog Group Patient Safety Ratings, as well as mortality and complication rates.
