Bicycle Safety

Do you remember your first bicycle? Those shiny handlebars, gleaming frame, musical bell, and big wheels. It looked like it could go as fast as the wind. And you were ready to hop on and go for a ride. Your children probably want to do the same thing when they get their first bicycles. But slow down. First, you will need to teach them about the rules of bicycle safety.

Rule 1. Take care of the bike.
Tires should be inflated properly and the chain oiled regularly. Handlebars and seats can be adjusted for height as children grow. Check brakes for frayed cables and replace worn out brake pads.

Rule 2. Dress appropriately.
Children can wear brightly colored or fluorescent clothing so they are more visible on the road. Watch out for loose-fitting or flared pant legs that can get caught in the bike chain. Avoid shoes that do not grip the pedals, such as cleats, heels or flip-flops.

Rule 3. Always wear a helmet.
A helmet can help protect against brain injury in case of an accident. It should fit snugly against the head and be worn level so it covers the forehead. Always fasten the straps. Replace helmets that have been involved in accidents.

Rule 4. One child per bike.
Never allow another child to share the seat or ride on the handlebars. That can make it too easy to lose balance and swerve into traffic.

Rule 5. Obey all traffic lights and signals.
Stop for stop signs, look both ways before crossing a busy street, yield to pedestrians, and ride in the same direction as the cars. Use correct hand signals when changing lanes and do not ride too close to parked cars since doors can open suddenly.

Rule 6. Ride smart.
Ride single file when with a group and watch out for potholes, cracks, rocks or other obstacles that could cause loss of bike control. Do not wear headphones or stand up when riding a bike. Avoid riding at dusk or in the dark.
