Women and Heart Disease

Every minute a woman dies of this silent disease.
Are you armed to fight it?

Heart disease is the No. 1 killer of women - and is largely preventable.

Many women today do not recognize heart disease as being a leading problem and cause of death among women. In fact, if asked, most women would name cancer as their greatest health risk. Yet, more than 40 percent of women will eventually die of heart disease or stroke.

Knowing the Facts May Save Your Life
Your thoughts become your actions, which is why heart awareness is so crucial. You CAN do something about heart disease. Here are some points to keep in mind:

  • Cardiovascular diseases claim more women's lives than the next 4 causes of death combined.
  • 16,000,000 people alive today have coronary heart disease. This is about 8,700,000 males and 7,300,000 females.
  • Coronary heart disease is caused by atherosclerosis (ath"er-o-skleh-RO'sis), the narrowing of the coronary arteries due to fatty buildups of plaque. It's likely to produce angina pectoris (chest pain), heart attack or both.
  • Cardiovascular disease is largely preventable, so understanding this serious health threat can make a lifesaving difference.
