Diabetes Risk Assessment

Most people have heard of diabetes. You might even know someone who has the disease, which affects more than 20 million people in the United States. What you might not know is that nearly one-third of these diabetics do not even know they are sick.

Pre-diabetes is when your blood glucose levels that are higher than normal, but not high enough to be diagnosed with diabetes. Becoming more common in the United States, the Department of Health and Human Services estimates that 40 percent of American adults ages 40 to 74 have pre-diabetes.

Pre-diabetes raises the risk of developing type 2 diabetes, heart disease and stroke, but many steps can be taken to prevent or delay the onset of diabetes. Managing body weight and increased physical activity can lower your risk of developing diabetes. Consult with your physician on the steps you can take to help prevent diabetes.

Type 2 diabetes is the most common type of diabetes, and it is most often associated with certain ethnicities, older age, obesity, physical inactivity, a family history of diabetes or previous history of gestational diabetes. Around 80 percent of people diagnosed with type 2 diabetes are overweight.

Diabetes is a serious, lifelong condition that requires management to reduce the risk of complications and other medical conditions. Consult with your physician on the steps you can take to help prevent diabetes.

Research has shown that many of the complications associated with diabetes could be prevented with early detection and that sustained lifestyle changes, including modest weight loss and physical activity, can substantially reduce progression to diabetes among older adults who are at very high risk.
