According to the American Heart Association, there are more than two million people in the United States with atrial fibrillation. It most often develops in individuals who have high blood pressure, heart failure, disease of the heart's arteries, or disease of the heart valves. The likelihood of developing atrial fibrillation increases with age. Three to five percent of people over 65 have atrial fibrillation.
