Houston Northwest Medical Center offers the latest in advanced diagnostic studies to evaluate heartburn symptoms, diagnose GERD and determine the most appropriate course of treatment for each patient.
Esophageal manometry is a test used to measure the function of the lower esophageal sphincter (the valve that prevents reflux of gastric acid into the esophagus) and indicates if the esophagus is able to move food to the stomach normally. Manometry will indicate not only how well the esophagus is able to move food down the esophagus, but also how well the esophageal sphincter is working to prevent reflux.
Impedance pH monitoring technology involves combining the measurement of how often and for how long stomach acid enters the esophagus with the use of electrical currents to sense the movement of stomach contents upward into the esophagus.
Endoscopy utilizes a scope to view the inside of the esophagus and stomach to identify esophagitis (inflammation of the esophagus) or a pre-cancerous condition called Barrett's esophagus. Additionally, ulcers may be evaluated at the same time.
Barium Upper GI Series uses X-rays to study potential problems in the esophagus, stomach and upper part of the small intestine.
