Creating a World Just for Children in the Hospital
Nothing is more frightening to a child than being ill and needing to be hospitalized. Children miss the comforts of home and are confronted by different surroundings, new people, and sometimes even temporary separation from family or friends.
At Houston Northwest Medical Center, we understand these fears and appreciate that what children do not know about a surgical procedure may be what is most alarming. We have over 40 experienced pediatricians on our active medical staff, representing pediatric subspecialties such as anesthesiology, genetics, infectious disease, radiology, and surgery.
Our skilled nurses, respiratory therapy team, and other specially trained staff are here to provide children with the clinical care and emotional support they need.
We can offer the reassurances to help children during a potentially stressful time in their young lives. Our staff – many of whom are parents, or grandparents, themselves – knows how important it is to not only listen to what children are saying, but also pick up on the non-verbal clues that may call for a calm approach or encouraging word. We also appreciate parents’ desire to nurture and protect their children. That is why we provide a soothing atmosphere and involve parents in all aspects of their children’s care.
Private Suites Designed For Children
Private suites in our dedicated unit are designed with children in mind. Each spacious room has sleeping accommodations for a parent, as well as the necessary monitoring equipment, including pulse oximetry (to measure oxygen in the blood), that is closely watched by the nursing staff.
Wi-Fi access is available in each room, in addition to a plasma television with video games and an unlimited complimentary movie package.
Creating a Sense of Home on the Children’s Unit
We understand that not feeling well and being away from home can be stressful for children. That is why a toy-filled playroom is available for young patients to play so they can maintain a sense of normalcy while in the hospital.
A special menu also is offered from which children can select their favorite foods (with guidance from their physician and parents).
Another new amenity that helps children relax is a virtual fish tank located in the main hallway near the nursing station. Children love the vibrant colors and changing scenery with numerous fish of various sizes and colors that float and swim naturally. They can see beautiful underwater scenes that have a range of aquatic life, from anemones to clownfish, also known as “Nemo.”

In addition, the dedicated children’s unit features child-friendly décor that includes original art created by children from the local school districts on display in the hallways.
