ReShape Gastric Balloon

A New Kind of Weight-Loss Surgery

For those looking to lose weight, Houston Northwest offers a new, non-surgical option for weight loss — the ReShape Gastric Balloon. The ReShape Integrated Dual Balloon System is a temporary, implanted balloon device that aids in weight loss by restricting the amount of food that your stomach can hold.

How It Works

Unlike traditional weight-loss surgeries, which often involve making permanent changes to your stomach and digestive processes, the gastric balloon is a temporary weight loss aid. The gastric balloon is implanted in the stomach using an endoscopic device that involves no cutting or stitching. The procedure takes just minutes, during which time you’ll be sedated. The device remains in your stomach for approximately six months, after which your doctor removes it.

While the balloon is implanted, it takes up space in your stomach, effectively reducing the stomach’s size. This helps to reduce the amount of food required to feel full, making it easier to choose healthy foods in reasonable portions.

Support to Change Your Habits — Permanently

While the balloon is in place and for six months after it’s removed, you’ll be provided with nutritional coaching to help you change your lifestyle and maintain your weight loss for the long term. The gastric balloon is a tool to help you jump-start your weight loss and develop the tools you need to maintain a healthy, lifelong relationship with good nutrition and physical activity.

In addition, the ReShape system includes a Fitbit® tracker and scale to help you monitor your activity and weight-loss efforts.

Who Can Benefit

ReShape Gastric Balloon is intended for individuals who have been unsuccessful in losing weight through diet and exercise alone. It may also be an option for individuals who do not qualify for other more traditional weight loss surgical procedures or do not wish to undergo those surgeries. To qualify, patients need to have a body mass index (BMI) between 30 and 40 and have one or more obesity-related conditions, such as:

  • Diabetes
  • High blood pressure
  • High cholesterol

Weight loss surgery is generally designed for those with a body mass index (BMI) equal to or greater than 40, or equal to or greater than 35 with serious co-morbidities. Other weight loss procedures, such as laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding with the Lap Band® and endoscopic balloon procedures, are also FDA-approved for weight loss surgery in certain people with a BMI of 30 to 35.  Weight loss procedures are considered safe, but like many types of medical intervention, they do have risks. Consult with your physician about the risks and benefits of weight loss procedures. Patient testimonials reflect results achieved by these patients.  As each case must be independently evaluated and managed, actual weight loss will vary.
