Bone Density Testing and Treatment

Bone health is an important part of a woman’s overall health. That’s why the Breast Center at Houston Northwest Medical Center offers bone densitometry to measure bone mass. The results of a bone densitometry scan are used to identify the extent of osteoporosis and, if necessary, to determine a treatment program to reduce the risk of fracture. The lower your bone mass density, the higher your risk for fractures.

Who Should Get Bone Testing?

The National Osteoporosis Foundation recommends that you have a bone density test if:

  • You are a women over the age of 65
  • You break a bone after age 50
  • You are a woman of menopausal age with risk factors (risk factors include being thin, female and Caucasian or Asian; having a family history of osteoporosis; having an inactive lifestyle; current cigarette smoking; excessive alcohol intake; and abnormal absence of menstrual periods)
  • You are a postmenopausal woman under age 65 with risk factors
